Rachel Gundry
Discipline Calligraphy, carving, mixed media
RG Lettering is based in my workshop in Milverton, where I draw alphabets freehand, and enjoy carving my own letterforms into various stones that I have grown to love for their different qualities. I make memorials and house signs, which are satisfying to see in place and rewarding in the human connection to individuals commissioning the work. It is wonderful to see the carving becoming part of the landscape and I have also worked with garden designers to create pieces for a specific location.
Calligraphy and typography can be an expressive abstract artform which also holds meaning in the content of the words chosen. It is true that once ‘set in stone’ words achieve a monumental significance – I love David Shrigley’s shopping list in granite, which I wish I’d thought of first.
I also enjoy relief carving sculptural elements as in the images below which were carved around the sides of a memorial bowl, made from York stone. During the 10 Parishes Festival I plan to be carving a piece of polyphant stone (from Cornwall), a softer stone which can be modelled in a more expressive way.
Visitors can try out carving on pieces of local slate or soft Maltese limestone in the linhey space at the field (spaces allowing – if busy, you can book to come back later on). Anyone is welcome to come and discuss a commission with me there, or make an appointment to visit the Milverton workshop at later date, to look at stone samples and examples of work.
