Reflections – 10 Parishes Festival 2023
Judy Willoughby - Mountain Ride Painting

Judy Willoughby – Paintings, Prints and Textiles

Discipline: Painting, Photography, Installation

My working life was spent teaching, running printmaking workshops and specific projects for schools and hospitals. I have also done many paintings commissioned for private and public buildings. I was a printmaker for many years but now concentrate on more direct methods of making art.

Nowadays I spend more time painting my garden or working in the studio painting landscape from memory and imagination. Plants have been therapeutic to me in times of sadness and nothing is  better for me than to sit focused on the detail in a plant regardless of how accurate the drawing is. It is always rewarding.

I also like to visit the Somerset Coast and Cornwall and love the colours of the changing light on the sea. Painting the moods of the sea with feelings of high energy contrasting with calmness and light.

In 2020 I took part in a project about the Somerset Coast part funded by the Somerset Wildlife Trust. The research was fascinating and made me realise the diversity of marine life just down the road and how it could be under threat from climate change if sea temperatures rise. As a follow up to the project I made 26 textile hangings for an exhibition at Glastonbury Rural life museum.

For 10 Parishes the hangings will be installed outside in my Secret Garden where there will be some activities on Saturdays. Please call nearer the time for details. The studio exhibition will also continue in the garden shed with Sylvie Baclet also exhibiting pottery. From clay figurative sculptures to glazed slab built ceramic pieces, Sylvie’s unique creations are inspired by nature and mankind’s relation to it.
