David Manners – The Clay Menagerie
Discipline: Ceramics
David’s handbuilt ceramic sculptures are all unique creations and feature animals and birds, depicting a behaviour or characteristic of the individual species. Based on a life-long study of wildlife in the natural world, they may exhibit a motion or action associated with courtship behaviour or interaction between pairs or groups of their kind.
Built using an earthenware clay and decorated with underglaze pigments, each sculpture depicts the form, colours and textures of skin, fur and feather along with features of their habitat in many instances.
No newcomer to the 10 Parishes Festival, David has previously exhibited as a photographer and it is through his experiences of observing and recording wildlife and the natural world, that he gains his understanding and insight into the actions of his subjects.
