Contrasts - September Soiree

John Baxter - Contrasts: A September Soiree

John Baxter and Others Concert – Saturday September 6th, 2025 7pm

Contrasts: September soirée with hot buffet and drinks from the bar. Jazz piano, followed by John Baxter’s dazzling repertoire of classical and contemporary music on organ. You will not be disappointed by the ´joie de vivre’ which John brings to his performance.

John Baxter is a highly accomplished pianist and organist whose range extends from the complexities of the classical greats to the delights of contemporary pop and jazz. From Rachmaninov to Queen, from Scott Joplin to Chopin, John has mastered them all and brings his own twist to every performance. His organ recital will include a mix of demanding classical numbers and an entertaining melay of contemporary music set to his own arrangements.

At the time of writing, the programme is likely to include the following:

* Processional – by Dom Sebastian Wolff late of Buckfast Abbey
* Liberty Bell – by John Philip Sousa – as a nod to the Marines band! (and of course Monty Python!)
* Knightsbridge March – by Eric Coates (of Dambusters March fame)
* Church Service Interrupted by a Thunderstorm – a riot of a piece by by David Clegg, the first organist of Blackpool Winter Gardens (St Andrew’s organ looks to have good resources for this one)
* The Typewriter – by Leroy Anderson (theme tune from The New Quiz) (with typewriter bell * Intermezzo from Karelia Suite – by Sibelius (theme tune for ITV’s This Week from 1956-1978)
* Toccata – Widor
