Reflections – 10 Parishes Festival 2023
Chris Allen Mappa Mundi

Chrys Allen – Hurstone Open Studios

Discipline  Drawing, Mixed Media, Printmaking

Works on paper including drawings, scrolls, maps and prints. These musings and meanderings imply that both walking and drawing allow the imagination to wander.

“With no preferred vantage point, no favourite view or season, these walks drawings allow the eyes and the imagination to drift;  the drawings move through seemingly relatable landscapes and sensations: A zooming in and panning out accommodates a sense of movement, the notion of time passing when walking.

The drawings mark the shifts and changes in the landscape and include observing the twists and turns of routes (and roots) of ancients paths; seamlessly weaving imagery together to make a continuous whole, as if a film spliced and edited. There are scrolls, ‘Walks in Progress,’ ‘Lost’ Maps, ‘Mappa Mundi’, ‘Wanderings’, ‘Musings’ and ‘Meanderings’ and most recently a series of  ‘Circular Walks’  My mapping of the landscape close to Hurstone.

In addition to artworks by Chrys Allen a collection of works titled  “Consequences” will be on show:  Based on the DaDa ‘Exquisite Corpse’ and the parlour game ‘Heads, Bodies and Feet’. The exhibition celebrates the delight in the unexpected and intuitive… and sharing the consequences. 15 invited artists involved were given guidance instructions to create heads, hands, feet (or abstract shapes) in any medium to fit in supplied standardised boxes;  these ‘heads bodies and feet’ are shown mismatched with those made by others, as in the parlour game.

Artists exhibiting in ‘Consequences’ : Sophie Molins, David Smith, Jazz Moore, Phil Moore, Lucy Cooper, Michael Cooper, Jacy Wall, Jenny Graham, Bronwen Bradshaw, Penny Elfick, Jo Fairfax, Michael Fairfax, Louise Baker, Chrys Allen, Bunny Starkey.
