Nicky Saunter – Taking Root – Poems and Pictures

Discipline Illustration, Painting, Poetry

I have been writing poems, painting and drawing all my life, but this is the first time I have shown these different ways of working together. I have come to realise that certain themes emerge both in the written word and in visual works, being simply different expressions of the same thought patterns. Sometimes they merge to the extent that I think I have already drawn a particular image, whereas I have actually written a poem. The wiring in our brains is a wonderfully endless mycelium web constantly forging new pathways and linking memories, ideas, images and words in surprising ways.

Poetry comes to me through a mixture of magic and concentrated work. Some arrive complete and it feels almost like cheating to say that I wrote them. Others are more hard won and need to be sharpened, tailored, nipped and tucked. Often they are image driven, either by something I have seen, remembered or imagined.

I use acrylic paint, watercolour, Chinese brushes with traditonally ground ink, as well as pencil, graphite and fine ink pens.
