Jane Mowat – Open Studio
Discipline – Carving printmaking and jewellery
Jane will be exhibiting woodcuts and carvings, as well as demonstrating her working process throughout the day. All welcome!
Jane has had a studio at Hurstone (now little Hurstone) for 29 years. Here she has developed her career using natural wood as a material to carve and print from. Her subjects are nature, and our relationship to it. Figures observe, contemplate or travel through the environment of trees, mountains and animals.
Her degree and career have been based on our visual culture, Western and beyond, and from this she has developed her understanding of the language of shape and form, of body language and our place within the world that we have created, and which we inhabit.”
One of the artist’s local claims to fame is a four-poster bed (at present in a woodland near Chipstable), carved as an installation piece where people are invited to lie, and if they are brave enough, sleep overnight. It was also named the ‘River Bed’ for two years, when placed in the river Tone. The artist always sleeps the night on occasion when it is out in situ as a way of connecting more deeply with the elements and nature!
Most of her work has been involved in working and responding to natural woods – elm and oak – for example, through printmaking or relief carving.
This is mainly what will be on display in her studio for 10 Parishes.
Jane has however increasingly worked on longer projects in the last few years, exploring large-scale glass sculpture and embroidery on linen as forms of expression.
Jane’s work can be viewed on her website. She gives workshops from her studio (organised to suit individuals and small groups). You are welcome to contact her for these and commissions.
