 Rosie Boylan – Ceramics

Discipline Ceramics

I have been a student of Jo Dove’s for around nine years, Jo is an exceptional potter. I am very fortunate that Jo’s studio is around the corner from me. I mainly work in stoneware and earthenware and look forward to exhibiting my work for the first time. I lived in India for a number of years and fell in love with the bold colours everywhere and enjoy glazing my pots particularly in bright turquoise.

Whilst I was on a painting holiday in Spain run by Louise Waugh, I came across the tin glazed earthenware pottery of the Alpujarras.  My Majolica work is influenced by the blue pomegranate motif which is typical of this pottery in Southern Spain. After a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Athens I was inspired to make a set of mugs referencing the style of the three thousand year old drinking vessels on display.

By contrast, the Folk art of Mexico inspired me to make vibrantly coloured candlestick holders and butterdishes.

I am currently working on a series of pasta bowls which I’m glazing in bone ash.
