Organisers of The 10 Parishes Festival, based in Wiveliscombe, heard the news of the Brewhouse closure with great sadness. The loss of such a cultural hub in our county town is bound to impact on anyone who is involved with the Creative Industries. The Festival was much enhanced in 2011 when the Brewhouse Theatre brought The Summer Set to Wiveliscombe Town Hall to perform thought provoking shows using local actors. The skills of the producers in adapting the unused Town Hall space and the talent of Robert Miles, Director, in getting the very best out of the actors, showed us all a little of what we have now lost. Our hearts go out to all those who will lose their jobs at the theatre. The knock on effect of lost business to companies and suppliers in Taunton and beyond can’t be calculated. The loss to artists and creative people of a central, professional hub will be more than just exposure to the public – it will be an emotional tie lost.
The 10 Parishes Festival, in it’s small way, offers creative people the opportunity to show their work to as many people in as many rural locations as possible and with the loss of the Brewhouse in Taunton it is even more important that we all support the creative and artistic people in our communities. For without them, we shrivel and die.
